Kaloob : Philippine Music and Dance Ministry
KALOOB: Musika at Sayaw ng Bayan Alay Kay Hesus is a worship group composed of musicians, dancers, researches and enthusiasts. Founded by Pastor Ed Lapiz, under the auspices of the Day By Day Christian Ministries, KALOOB is dedicated to continuously and fastidiously study and promote traditional Philippine music and dance and teach them to Christian churches so that these creative expressions can be adapted for contemporary worship.
It is the utmost desire of KALOOB to spur the Church into the future with feet firmly grounded on solid cultural heritage and sense of self. The goal of KALOOB is to see churches use and reinterpret for contemporary worship the rich musical, dance, and costume heritage of the Filipino people. This is mainly because the dance and music vocabulary of the Filipino Christian and the Filipino nation as a whole at present needs enriching and Filipinization. Today, most worship teams are confined to and limited by borrowings from foreign forms, missing a treasure trove of sights, and movements more expressive of the Filipino soul.
KALOOB is composed of artists from various congregations to serve the whole Body of Christ. As such, KALOOB continues to screen and accept musicians, dancers, technicians, etc. into its fold. KALOOB can only find rest and fulfillment when the rest of the Filipino Christian Church is already into research, study, redemption, utilization and propagation of Filipino music and dance in worship!
KALOOB is also committed to:assist Christian churches in acquiring / collecting Filipino musical instruments for use in worship.develop its music and dance troupe to (perform-worship) at Christian events and gatherings.collect and make available for study Philippine musical instruments, costumes and other artifacts relevant to the understanding, appreciation, preservation and promotion of Filipino culture for Christian worship.research on, document, teach and promote vanishing musical and dance forms.escalate the contextualization of Christian doctrine through scholarly study of Filipino paradigms and material culture and their great potentials as tools of evangelism and edification.evolve a Filipino Christian liturgy and music and contribute the same to the universal Church.inspire and assist churches in other countries to also redeem their culture for God's glory.worship and serve God as Filipino Christians.
The Redemption of Dance
Just like in Biblical times, dance today has been and continues to be gravely corrupted and misused. However, this must not necessitate the complete and wholesale rejection and destruction of the art form. It is too precious, too beautiful and too powerful a tool to be abandoned and left entirely in the hands of the devil.
The Philosophy of redeeming dance for Christian worship is premised on the following principles :
1. Created arts, especially music and dance came from God and must be used for God's glory. Satan does not own anything. He is not a creator but a thief and a destroyer.Creative arts like most creation, were only grabbed, distorted and misappropriated for himself by the evil one.
2. God's people who were they themselves redeemed by the blood of Christ who are inheritors of the earth, must repossess such arts for Christian use and God's glory. The whole creation has been groaning for redemption! Dance can be very powerful tools of evangelism and worship.
3. Philippine dance forms like most indegenous dances all over the world, are neither 'pagan' nor 'evil'. As non-living things, they do not have inherent, nor capable of morality or immorality. It is the heart of the dancer and the object of worship that define the morality of the art form.
